Book Editor
Use a Book for an illustrated story, an in-game journal, or a reference the player can turn through. A Book contains spreads, with optional narration and choices that branch to another spread.
Prerequisites
Show Advanced resources and open a Book. Prepare any picture Sprites, narration Sounds, and Font you need. Declare the Globals used in text or choice conditions.
Write and Arrange Spreads
- Add a spread and select it in the rail. Enter the text and choose its picture resource if the layout has one.
- Choose Spread Layout. Use a picture-and-words layout for illustrated pages or words on both pages for a text-heavy Book.
- Add another spread. Check their order and preview each spread before adding branching.
- In Book mode, set Title and Subtitle for a hard cover. Add a Cover image and a picture description. End note adds a back cover.
- Set Book Style, Font, Text size, alignment, paper, and ink colors. Save and reopen the resource.
Import choices can add after existing spreads or replace all spreads. Keep a backup before replacement. Source import supplies content; review layout and the Writing Check afterward.
Add Narration and Choices
Choose a Narration sound on each spread that needs recorded speech. Reading and Narration controls determine choice navigation, behavior while narration plays, and Auto-Turn After Narration. Check both a recorded spread and a silent spread so navigation doesn’t depend on audio that isn’t there.
Add a choice with a destination spread and visible text. Show only if is an expression; declare its state first and test both true and false values. A stay-on-this-spread destination does not advance the story. Use Story Paths to inspect branches and unreachable content.
Actions for a spread connect page entry to game behavior. If entering a spread awards an item, protect that award with state so turning back to the page doesn’t award it again.
Open and Check the Book
Use Control Book in a placed controller’s Logic to open the selected Book. Playtest page turns, every choice, narration completion, and closing the Book. Check the actual game at its smallest supported window size; fitting in the authoring preview does not establish readable text in every View.
Expected result: the Book opens with its configured cover/content, turns through the intended spreads, and follows available choice destinations. Closing it returns control according to your game’s input and pause policy.
Troubleshooting
If a choice is absent, inspect Show only if and its live values. If navigation stays on a page, check the destination and narration settings. If text or pictures disappear, check the selected layout, Font glyph coverage, image resource, and contrast. If content changed after import, use Undo or restore your backup before importing again.
