Pixel Editor
Use Pixel Editor to draw or change artwork inside a Sprite, Background, or Tileset. Image dimensions and brush sizes are source pixels. The Object’s world size is set separately in metres.
Prerequisites
Open a resource with imported artwork or create blank artwork through its Import/Create mode. Save a project backup before changing a sheet already used by animation clips or Scene tiles.
Draw on a Layer
- Choose Pixel Editor from the resource’s mode selector.
- Select the intended layer and frame. Check that the layer is visible and unlocked.
- Choose Pencil (
N) for a hard pixel stroke or Paint Brush (B) for the available brush controls. Select a color and a small brush size. - Draw a short stroke. Use Undo to remove it, then draw again to check the active layer and frame.
- Choose Eraser (
E) to remove pixels. Transparency shows through to lower visible layers. - Switch back to the resource’s other mode and inspect the result. Save, reopen, and check the same frame.
Expected result: the selected frame retains your stroke after reopening. A change to a shared resource can affect every Object or Scene that uses it.
Layer Actions includes rename, duplicate, move, and delete operations. Put a separate mark on a second layer when you need to move or hide it independently. Hiding a layer affects the composed artwork; locking it prevents accidental editing.
Work with a Selection
Box Select (M) limits edits to a selected region. Magic Wand Select (W) selects connected similar pixels; Select by Color (Y) selects matching color. Check the selected area before a fill or deletion.
Move Selection (V) moves the selected content. A selection and a whole layer have different boundaries, so inspect both after moving. Use Undo if a stroke or fill affects a smaller area than intended, then clear or replace the selection.
Solid Fill (G), Gradient Fill, Draw Line (L), Draw Box (U), and Draw Ellipse (O) provide alternatives to freehand painting. Pick Color (I) samples existing artwork. Review tool options such as opacity, fill, and stroke width before committing a shape.
Change Dimensions and Frames
Resize Canvas changes the source extent. Its Canvas Resize Anchor determines where existing content stays when the canvas grows or shrinks. Reducing dimensions can crop artwork. Inspect every affected frame and retain a backup before accepting the crop.
Frame edits change artwork; animation clips determine playback order and duration. For a Sprite sheet, check cutting boundaries and clip references after a geometry change. For a Tileset, check tile identities, collision metadata, and existing Scene maps. Backgrounds also have output-fit settings outside the drawing surface.
Troubleshooting
If drawing produces no visible change, check the active layer, lock, visibility, frame, selection, opacity, and color. If a stroke looks soft, use Pencil and inspect at a suitable zoom. Zoom changes your view, not stored image resolution.
If another resource placement changes unexpectedly, inspect which shared Sprite, Background, or Tileset it uses. If artwork is clipped, inspect canvas dimensions, resize anchor, and cutting boundaries before changing Object size.
